The European neutron community counts almost 10000 - mainly academia-based - users, which are supported by an ecosystem of about 10 world-class national facilities and European facility, the Institute Laue Langevin (ILL). Europe leads neutron science and is investing almost 2B€ in the European Spallation Source (ESS), its construction, like Horizon 2020, span the period 2014-2020.

A new neutron project that started in October 2015 and lasts for four years has recently been accepted for funding under the European Commission HORIZON 2020 framework. Like NMI3, the new project is a consortium of the major European neutron facilities and their academic partners conducting neutron research and are coordinated by the ILL. The SINE2020 kick-off meeting took place at the same time as the NMI3 final General Assembly.

SINE2020, world-class Science and Innovation with Neutrons in Europe is a project with two main objectives:

• preparing Europe for the unique opportunities at ESS in 2020 and
• developing the innovation potential of large scale neutron facilities (LSF’s).
