Collaborations

Considerable effort has been devoted to methodical-instrumental development in the past years. To balance the situation of the large scale instrumentation and the modest financing, the BNC staff has practiced to design and construct spectrometers by their own efforts using minimum commercial components. Thus, the instrumentation at BNC - to a large extent - consists of home-made neutron optics and electronics, selectors, detectors, shielding elements and the like. Another consequence of this kind of methodological development programme is the commercialization of neutron equipment via technology transfer to spin-off companies.

Several SMEs on the KFKI science campus (Mirrotron Ltd., RegTron Ltd..…) form the industrial ensemble to provide a sizable volume to produce neutron instrumentation. This strategy was confirmed by numerous successful grant applications, in accordance with the policy of the funding agencies (National Innovation Office) to promote collaboration between the academic sector and the industry.

Education and professional training is an important mission for the BNC staff: we have been involved in graduate and professional training, (teaching at several universities, tutoring PhD thesis works, organizing international training courses). The first comprehensive text-book on neutron scattering in Hungarian was published in 2009. (by L. Cser).

Organization and co-ordination of international collaborations has ever been a preference for BNC. The Hungarian membership in ILL in the framework of the Central European Neutron Initiative (CENI, co-operation with AU, CZ, HU, SK) was managed also by our staff until the national support was available and expect to revive it soon. Beside bilateral projects with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna) and the Kurchatov Institute Russian Research Center in the early years of BNC, collaboration at the scientists level with MLZ institutes and HZB is examplary. BNC has participated in a number of EU-supported infrastructural large scale collaborative projects, which are listed separately.
