  • BNC Science Proposal deadline extended to October 18, 2020

    In spite of the restrictions affecting the User Program the Budapest Research Reactor in BNC will continue to operate according to the announcd schedule. However, user experiments are only possible to conduct remotely. The management of BNC encourages potential users to submit their proposals - possibly following a discussion with the respective instrument responsible - selecting the remote experiment option in the proposal.  Read more.

  • COVID-19 update #4 - Remote User Operation - Sept 07, 2020 on

    Due to the recently re-introduced governmental restriction of the international mobility and other regulations to control the spread of the corona virus, until further notice, the user program of BNC is restricted to remote experiments. According to the present plans the reactor operates on the announced schedule. Strict virus-related health regulations and social distancing measures will remain in effect on the reactor premises.

  • COVID-19 update #3 - Restart of reactor operation, May 11, 2020

    With the partial easing of the national restrictions on COVID-19, it will be possible to restart the Budapest Research Reactor with implementation of strict virus-related health safety regulations and continued social distancing measures. From May 11 2020 on, 2020, the Budapest Research Reactor is planned to be operated according to the previously announced schedule.

    Next BNC Science Proposal deadline: May 17, 2020
    The present regulations related to the COVID-19 do not allow users to visit the BNC premises. However, after discussions with the instrument responsible remote experiments are possible and are encouraged to conduct. The samples are to be sent in advance to BNC via post and the experiment is performed by the BNC instrument scientist, amid a continuous communication with the user. Please indicate the remote experiment option in your proposal.

  • COVID-19 update #2 - reactor operation suspended

      In line with the restrictive measures on travel by the Hungarian Government, as well as considering the health of our staff and of the users as a top priority, the user program of BNC has been suspended. Moreover, starting at the end of the 39/16 reactor cycle on 20 March, the operation of the reactor was also suspended.
  • COVID-19 update #1: User operation suspended

      Due to the corona virus crisis, the BNC reactor schedule will be changed. Starting from 23 March the BNC user operation will be suspended until further notice. The present reactor cycle will end on Friday 14:00 to be followed by a reactor downtime at least until 11 May. The spring beam time proposal submission deadline is postponed. The exact date will be announced in due time.
  • Prof. János Füzi (1960-2020)

      It is with deepest sadness and sorrow to report that our colleague and friend, Prof. János Füzi, distinguished scientist of BNC, the head of the Neutron Spectroscopy Department, Professor at the University of Pécs  – having lost his few-weeks battle with an invasive illness – passed away on 11 January.

  • Closure of research reactors shifts landscape for EU neutron community

    Three neutron science research reactors in Europe (JEEP II near Oslo, Norway, BER II, Berlin, Germany and LLB at Saclay, France) have ceased operations in 2019. The “neutron gap” may impact scientific research across multiple fields in physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, medical science and engineering - warn LENS and ENSA.

  • Imaging in automotive applications

    Neutron tomography quality test to spot defects in electro-rotors - presented to the Automotive Industry. 
    Mr. Tibor Brányik, division manager of TRIGO Group presented a procedure using neutron tomography, developed in cooperation with the Budapest Neutron Centre which - in contrast to widely used X-ray imaging is capable of identifying material defects of bulky electro-rotors. Conference report.

  • Hands-on-training for students at BNC

      BNC, exhibitor at Automotive Hungary Trade Exhibition Budapest in 2017 and 2018 organized “Tech-together” quiz competitions for university students on a wide range of technical topics, attracting large number of young people. The most active team of the 2018 competition, a team from University of Szeged, Faculty of Engineering, won the prize: a dedicated neutron hands-on-training course at BNC. This mini-course took place on 19 September. The expenses of the students were covered by the Sine2020 project.
